What is Camping and What is It
Like?

Camping is a form of recreation that is popular
in the United States and other parts of the
world.  While some types of camping are
Tent Camping
enjoyed by a number of people such as tent camping, backpacking or RV camping.  Other types are less
well-known such as canoe camping, winter camping, bike camping and car camping.
Camping can be a social event such as with group camping or it can be something a person does on their
own.  Camping usually entails cooking your own meals.  If tent camping or backpacking, this is often done
over a fire, charcoal, a butane burner or burner stoves using propane or kerosene.  However, if you are
at a campground and have electric hookups an electric skillet can work great too.   Personally, I love
cooking over an open fire the best.  I swear the food tastes better too!

Many types of camping require special equipment.  RV or recreational vehicle camping requires a special
type of trailer or vehicle fitted for the camping experience.  Most of these include running water,
cooking facilities and bathroom facilities as well as bedding.

Tent camping and backpacking usually involves a tent, bedding and a few cooking items.  Tent camping
can be done in a campground or backpacking.  Backpackers carry their supplies along with them as they
hike.  We love to tent camp.  We stayed in an RV once and found it too claustrophobic.  A tent
encourages me to be outside which is why I am there in the first place.

While winter camping is done in the winter as opposed to the summer, other types of camping revolve
around another activity such as canoing, biking or driving as with car camping.

The mainstream types of camping, tent camping and RV camping, are often done at state and Federal
park campgrounds as well as recreation centers and private campgrounds.
Where to Find Coupons and Discounts for
Campgrounds?

  • Camping coupon books are available.  One of
these is offered by the Connecticut Campground
Owners Association.  Although there is a charge
for the book, it offers camping specials such as
FREE nights and weekends at camping sites, FREE
meals, boat rentals, firewood and activities as
well as discounts on rentals, Rvs and parts.

  • Most campgrounds offer special camping offers
on camping sites throughout the year.

  • Discounted rates are often offered in the fall and
winter season.  Some state and federal
campgrounds are FREE through the winter.
  • Many of the Kampgrounds of America offer a buy one/get one FREE night over their official start to
the camping season.  This is usually the second weekend of May.  Other times of the year offer
such specials as stay 2 or 3 nights and get 1 FREE.

  • Many states have FREE campgrounds.  These are usually more primative with no running water and
little to no amenities.  However, there are some that do have a number of amentiites.  There are
also many campgrounds that are available for as small a fee as $5 a night.  Check out Freecampsites.
net to see what is available in your state.

  • Some stores such as Walmart and Home Depot offer overnight parking.  These can also be seen on
    Freecampsites.net.
Where to Find Coupons and Discounts for Camping Supplies, Equipment and
Gear?

  • Coupon websites such as Retailmenot.com, Dealspl.us and Woot.com offers discount coupons and
    camping deals on supplies.

  • Camping supplies often go on sale or clearance at sporting goods stores at the end of camping
season.  Deals and discounts on camping supplies and equipment can often be found then.

  • Check out the camping supply stores when you are on your trip.  I have found some supplies
cheaper or on sale at the stores.  Some campgrounds with a store have fliers with camping
    discount coupons.

  • Large camping stores such as Camping World often have coupons for camping supplies.

  • Look for camping supplies in retail or drug stores.  I have found some things cheaper at Walmart
and even drug stores.   There is not always a large selection but if they have something you need
    it can be cheaper.

  • Look online at Ebay or Craigslist for people who tried camping and didn’t like it or selling their
items for some other reason.  Second hand is almost always cheaper and offer some great online
    deals.
